Great New Blueberry Variety – Cupla

Berries For Africa is proud to grow and supply 28 different varieties of blueberries, and we’re excited to introduce a new addition to our collection – the Cupla variety.

Cupla is a cutting-edge blueberry variety developed by Cuna de Plantero in Spain. What makes Cupla stand out is its early production and impressive yield. It’s one of the earliest fruiting varieties, starting production at the end of November and continuing through to May in northern hemisphere regions, like the coastal areas of Spain. In the southern hemisphere, including places like Zimbabwe, Namibia, and coastal or low-lying regions of South Africa, where chilling hours are minimal or absent, Cupla begins its harvest in autumn and continues through winter (May to June).

The bulk of the harvest occurs in the autumn and winter months, making this variety an ideal option for areas where fresh fruit demand is highest during these cooler seasons.

Plant attributes:

  • Cupla presents the best production efficiency: An outstanding characteristic is that the fruit is more visible as it produces large berries that are easy to pick due to less vegetative mass and erect growth habit. This makes picking easier and faster, saving the producer on labour cost. On average, more than 1 ton per hectare per day is usually harvested.
  • The plant architecture allows high planting densities.
  • The fruiting branches have fruit all along their length, not only on the tip as is the case with other varieties.
  • Uniform berries and consistent size over the whole season.
  • Large size of 17mm – 18mm
  • Good sugar content. Brix: 11-12º
  • Due to the plant that have less foliage, it also requires less irrigation which helps to save water, electricity and fertilisers.
  • Very attractive color and bloom.
  • Its great taste is reminiscent of wild blueberries and its juiciness makes Cupla a tasty and highly appealing berry to customers.
  • No chilling requirement and can be used in warm Mediterranean and similar climates.
  • Great shelve life. Retains 97.5% of its weight after 30 days.
  • Free distribution under license which means that the fruit can be marketed and sold to anyone.

Examples Harvest efficiency:

55 kilograms harvested per person per harvest (6,5 hour/day).

Examples of high production per plant:

  • Around 1,5 kilograms of fruit per plant on bushes that are less than one years old.
  • Around 4 kilograms of fruit per plant on bushes that are less than two years old.
  • More than 7 kilograms of fruit per plant from can be expected 4th season of harvest.
